Charlie here. First things first: we’re DJing Friday night at Le Bain, 10 to late. Super excited to announce that our live performer for this one is Ren G. If you’ve been following her work since the Club Eat days, you already know you can’t miss this. She put out a 15-song mixtape called Miss 24/7 a few months ago that you should listen to if you haven’t already. Ren performs around midnight:
This week’s blog:
“Wizard Acid - GIFT Remix” - Psymon Spine
Psymon Spine have a second remix album on the way, and they’ve just released two of the tracks in advance. The A-side is a cool MGMT (!!) remix that’s heavy on the arpeggiators, and the B-side is somehow even better: a GIFT remix. I’m always in awe of TJ + Justin’s production skills, and hearing them reinterpret Psymon Spine is a real treat. Psymon Spine straddle the rock / dance line — their stuff is energetic in concert but can also work in the club. And when remixed, it totally crushes on the dancefloor.
“Live Or Die By Love” - lovetempo
The newest track from Mattie Safer (of The Rapture and Poolside) is my favorite of his advance singles (the EP is out at the end of February). Starts with a saxophone that makes you feel like you’re walking down the middle of a street at 5 AM as the sun is starting to come up and you’re in a weirdly good mood despite your eerie surroundings. Then you start dancing. There’s a chill-out section in the middle for you to catch your breath and grab a cup of coffee. Then the dancing comes back. Lovetempo is playing at Sleepwalk tonight.
“Sad Song” - Club Eat
Leaving you with an old Club Eat track. There’s a lot of great stuff on 2023’s Start, and “Clothes” is the biggest song. But this one is probably my favorite instead. The production is so spare, leaving room for this massive kick + bass synth combo that hits so hard. It’s a partying-as-therapy anthem: “The tears on my pillow have dried / I don’t wanna listen to a sad song tonight / Is it such a crime to wanna have a good time? / Staying out late til I see the sun shine”
On that note, see you at Le Bain on Friday; it’s gonna be above freezing finally.
